70 criminal cases are registered daily in Jammu kashmir
J&K: Every day Jammu Kashmir registers over 70 crime cases with around 2.6 lakh cases have been reported in the last decade.
Official figures accessed by the media reveal that around 70 crime cases get registered daily in Jammu and Kashmir.
In the last ten years, the figures say that around 2.6 lakh such cases have been registered in J-K.
The twin capitals of J-K have witnessed the highest number of crime cases.
In Jammu district, around 45,000 and in Srinagar over 30,000 cases have been registered in the last decade, contributing 30 percent to the total number of crimes committed in J-K.
A senior police official said there were many factors responsible for the highest rate of crime in the Jammu and Srinagar districts in J-K.
“Both these districts are the most populated districts in the Union Territory. People from other areas and states also come to these districts for employment, and many times, they, too, get involved in crimes,” the official said.
The highest number of cases has been related to rioting, burglary, molestation, cruelty by husband, assault on a public servant, attempt to murder, cheating, stabbing, and eve teasing.
In 2016, 1233 molestation cases were registered and rose to 1,361 in 2017.
Similarly, 805 abduction cases were registered in 2016, which increased to 913 in 2017.
The police official said many crimes go unreported in J-K either due to the remoteness of the location or victims choose to stay silent out of fear or social stigma attached to some crimes like molestation, eve teasing, or rape.
“There are some crimes, which are increasing in the valley. Police is dealing with such crimes, but it is also the responsibility of society to reduce the number of crimes in the region,” the official added.
