2 terrorists killed in Jammu likely to have been suicide attackers: Security forces

One jawan lost his life while at least nine others were injured after an encounter broke out between terrorists and security forces in Jammu. Two terrorists were also killed in the operation. The encounter took place two days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Samba district.

One security personnel died and at least nine others -- including Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawans -- were injured in the encounter that ensued in the Jalalabad Sunjwan area of Jammu district in the wee hours on Friday.

Five personnel were injured in the night. Among them was Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) SP Patel of the CISF, who succumbed to his injuries. Five more sustained injuries in the morning when a terrorist threw a grenade from a Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL).

Police Head Constable Balraj Singh of Kathua, SPO Sahil Sharma of Akhnoor, CISF’s Parmod Patra of Odisha and Amir Soran of Assam were among those injured in the gunfight between the security forces and terrorists.

Two terrorists were also killed in the Jammu encounter. Sources said the terrorists were part of an infiltration module. The terrorists eliminated appeared to have been Fidayeens or suicide attackers, a security official said. "They were carrying a large amount of ammunition," he said.

Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbag Singh told India Today the operation is still on. "Troops are on the ground. We are zeroing in on the terrorists," he said.

“We cordoned off the area in the night after receiving the information that a few terrorists are hiding here. One security personnel lost his life and four others got injured in the encounter. The encounter is underway", said Mukesh Singh, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Jammu.

As many as two Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists were believed to be trapped in the Sunjwan area. The joint operation was launched by Jammu and Kashmir Police and the CRPF.

The operation was launched after specific information was received by the joint team of forces in the Sunjwan area. Mobile and internet services were suspended in parts of Jammu. Meanwhile, drones were deployed to track down terrorists.

BUS CARRYING 15 CISF PERSONNEL WAS ATTACKED

CISF sources said a bus carrying 15 CISF personnel was attacked by terrorists when they were on their way to the area where terrorists were said to be trapped. The incident took place around about 4.25 am on Friday near Chaddha Camp in Jammu.

"Terrorists resorted to firing and attacking using grenades. CISF personnel retaliated effectively and forced the terrorists to run away, everting major loss," sources said.

"In the line of action, one ASI of the CISF has lost his life and two others are injured," sources said.

PM MODI'S VISIT

The encounter in Sunjwan took place amid heightened security arrangements in Jammu and Kashmir, two days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Samba district. PM Modi is scheduled to visit Jammu on April 24.

PM Modi will visit Pali village, 17 km from Jammu, to address a gathering on National Panchayati Raj Day (April 24), news agency PTI reported.

This will be PM Modi's first visit to Jammu and Kashmir other than borders since the abrogation of the special status of the erstwhile state and its bifurcation in August 2019.

He had celebrated Diwali with Army jawans on October 27, 2019 in Rajouri and on November 3, 2021 in Nowshera sector in Jammu division.
